AI Interior Stylist & Room Moodboard Generator (Case Study)

A modern, AI-assisted product concept demonstrating how I use AI to accelerate research, structure, and UI exploration.

Context & Opportunity

This idea came from a real painpoint at home. My wife kept taking photos of our rooms and uploading them into ChatGPT to get redesign ideas, but the results were slow, inaccurate, and inconsistent. It became clear that people need a fast, simple way to upload a real room and instantly see multiple style variations.

Problem Definition

AI tools can generate styled rooms, but the workflow isn’t built for interior design. It’s difficult to browse variations, refine small details, or personalise results without rewriting prompts or scrolling through long chats. Users need a fast, structured mobile experience that lets them explore styles, compare options and make adjustments without starting over.

Competitor, Content & UX Analysis

I explored inspiration platforms, AI tools and retailer apps. Platforms like Pinterest show ideas but not your space. AI tools generate results but are slow, prompt-heavy and inconsistent. Retailers offer nice imagery but weak visualisation. No mobile tool delivers fast, personalised redesigns from a single photo with meaningful refinement tools.

Rapid Concept Exploration with AI

I used AI to generate early layout options before designing in Figma. Quick visual exploration helped me test upload flows, card layouts and interaction ideas, allowing me to validate structure and visual direction rapidly before committing to the final mobile UI.

UX Strategy & User Flows

The mobile flow needed to feel instant and low-effort. Users upload a room photo, AI generates multiple styles, and they tap any variation to view it full-screen with a simple before/after slider. From there, they can refine the redesign with colour palettes or accessories, then save or download the result. The focus is clarity, speed and minimal input.

Design System

The system uses warm neutrals, soft shadows and large radii to create a calm, premium feel aligned with interior design brands. Georgia handles headings for an editorial tone, while Segoe UI delivers clean, legible UI text. Core components include the upload card, before/after slider, style cards, palette selector, primary buttons and a rounded bottom sheet for refinement tools.

The Final Design

The final mobile experience is simple and visual. Users upload a photo, instantly browse multiple AI-generated redesigns, and use a lightweight refinement panel to adjust colours or add accessories. A smooth before/after slider makes results easy to compare, and the palette selector allows quick personalisation without rewriting prompts.

Outcome

This concept demonstrates how AI can enable a faster, more intuitive mobile redesign workflow. It reduces friction, delivers instant clarity and gives users meaningful control over room styling without technical steps.

Impact & Learnings

​Using AI early accelerated exploration and clarified direction. The project showed that structured UX—not just AI output—is what makes redesign tools feel usable. Visual comparison, quick refinements and a clear flow are essential for turning AI into a practical design assistant.
